Women's Skincare Routine Over 50

Whether you’re a skincare novice or expert, your regimen is likely to change over the long term as you figure out what works best for you.

Cleanse and, Yes, Tone

Any skin, not just mature skin, should be washed with a mild, non-irritating cleanser that won’t dry out the skin, remove its natural oils or irritate dry and sensitive skin.

While using a toner is not necessary it can be a beneficial step after cleansing. A toner can supply an extra layer of moisture and help to improve the effectiveness of the skincare steps to follow.

Exfoliate—But Don’t Sand it Like a Coffee Table!

There are two different ways you can do it, both chemical (Alpha Hydroxy Acid AHAs and Beta Hydroxy Acid BHAs - both come from sugary fruits such as pineapple and papaya) and physical (scrubs) can be used on your mature skin, but you have to be careful.

As we age our skin becomes thinner and more susceptible to tearing.

It is more important now than ever to be gentle on your skin, while still providing an effective treatment to remove the layer of dead skin cells. 

The best approach is a minimal approach that is mild and can be done every other day. Face Yoga?

Bring Back the Moisture

This one goes out specifically to my warm blooded sisters braving the northern climates. We get it. When the air outside is cold and dry, the water in your skin evaporates more quickly; this makes your skin feel dry and tight, and makes it look flaky. Wear Sunscreen, Even Indoors!

Whether we are talking about skincare routines for over 50 or for teenagers. Whether we write about how to reduce crow’s feet or wrinkles around your lips, wearing sunscreen everyday, even indoor days, is rule numero uno.

We all know that sun exposure causes the skin to age rapidly and can cause cancer and sunburns. 

However, it’s important to know that there are two types of UV light: UVA and UVB: UVA rays tend to cause premature aging of the skin (also known as photoaging) UVB rays can cause skin cancers and sunburns.  An easy way to remember this is by replacing the “A” in UVA by “Aging” and the “B” in UVB by “Burn”.

Both types of rays are harmful, and you must protect against both, hence the importance of choosing a “broad spectrum” sunscreen (which

means that it protects from both, UVA and UVB rays).

Apply sunscreen with Sun Protection Factor (or SPF) of at least 30.

Keep in mind that sun damage is cumulative, so you not only get it from a sunny day at the beach but also from repetitive exposure to low doses of sun without protection.

That accumulated damage results in wrinkles, dark spots and loss of firmness. 

Protect your skin even if it is a cloudy day and even if you will be indoors: UVA rays pass through regular window glass, furthermore, some indoor lights emit UV rays.

If you’re heading to a beach or around reflective surfaces like snow or ice, you should use a higher SPF.

BONUS TIP: Tinted sunscreen lotions are a great way to obtain a healthy glow while protecting you from the sun, also, they help ensure an even and frequent application. Don’t forget to always include your neck and décolletage!!  Ditch the daily use of foundation and opt for a tinted sunscreen that, not only gives you an even, uniform color, but also helps reduce the number of products layered on your skin. Keep in mind that “tinted sunscreen” is not the same as “foundation with SPF”!

Eat Right, Exercise, Sleep Well, Drink Water, you know.. the Basics!

The truth is that even with the absolute best skincare products and routines nothing will cover up a poor lifestyle. Not drinking enough water, eating greasy foods or not getting enough sleep will definitely show up in your face.
